International development agenda and culture

November 2015

Professor Duncan French, Head of Lincoln Law School, gave a plenary talk on the interrelationship between development and culture at North-West University, South Africa.

Funded by the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Professor French spoke on the recent adoption by the United Nations of the Global Goals and the importance of culture in development activity.

Professor French said: 'Promoting research into sustainable development is a key objective for the Lincoln Centre for Environmental Law and Justice, and discussing culture and development at this international conference is a great way to disseminate the work of the Centre. Culture is an often neglected aspect of legal and political policy-making, but in fact it is central to its successful implementation. But promoting culture doesn't happen automatically and must be mainstreamed into the work of such bodies as the World Bank'.
